Watt (ship)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Watt was an electrically powered ship with an accumulator to store energy. It was procured in 1891 by the Allgemeine-Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft (AEG) for the Wannsee in Berlin and used there.

Technical specifications

The ship was made of oak and was planked with spruce. The length was 7.5 m, it was 1.9 m wide and had a draft of 0.9 m. The electric motor acting on a propeller had a nominal output of 3  HP (approx. 2.2  kW ). The accumulator was equipped with 46 cells with a total capacity of 150  Ah . The discharge current was about 25  A .

background

With the use of this battery-powered ship, the Allgemeine-Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft wanted to promote the spread of electrically powered vehicles, especially watercraft. This should also influence demand in other cities.

The electric drive had the advantage that you could drive off immediately. The disadvantage was the heavy accumulator and the limited range.
