Wauja

The Wauja , alternatively Waura , are an indigenous population group that lives in the central Brazilian region of the upper reaches of the Alto Xingu in the Brazilian part of the Amazon basin , in the Parque Indigena do Xingu , in the Mato Grosso .

The language of the Waura is one of the Arawak languages . The representation of the name with r or j is based on the fact that it is a palatal half-vowel. The spelling Waura is mainly found in older literature, linguists prefer the spelling with accented characters as Waujá or Waurá , the spelling of the ethnic group in Brazilian is also Uaurás .
