Weaver's Cottage

The Weaver's Cottage is a former weaving mill in the Scottish city of Kilbarchan in the Council Area Renfrewshire . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

The weaving trade in Kilbarchan played a prominent role for over 200 years. Around 900 handlooms were in operation there by the middle of the 19th century. With the automation of the craft, hand-weaving increasingly lost its importance. Around 1900 the activities in this branch of trade in Kilbarchan almost completely ended. Weaver's Cottage continued weaving until 1940. Built in 1723 for Andrew, John and Jenet Bryden, the building is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland , which operates it as a museum.

description

The building is located at the large intersection known as "The Cross" in the north-west of the city. The year of construction 1723 can be verified on the basis of the year on a door lintel. The Weaver's Cottage is built on sloping ground, which is why it is two-story at the south end and one at the north end despite the constant ridge height. The masonry is made of quarry stone, the gable roof is covered with slate. On the map of the Ordnance Survey from 1857, a part of the building can be seen on the south side that was demolished before 1897. Probably around the time of the demolition, a small annex was expanded into a laundry room with a water heater and chimney.
