Web to date (as meta element "generator" in order created websites as Web2Date called) is a web content management system (software for communal creation, editing and organization of content), the Düsseldorf software publisher Data Becker has driven . It was mainly programmed by Thomas Henrichs Software Development. and supplemented with designs and plugins from other Data Becker developers. The program can only be run under the Microsoft Windows operating system . The HTML and PHP websites are generated from the program and uploaded to the web server .

The software first appeared as version 1.0 in June 2002, most recently in July 2012 as version 8s, and was distributed together with application books from the Data Becker publishing house. Even users without design or HTML knowledge can use the program to create websites . The user guidance and software wizards help. The websites generated can be updated or expanded at any time. The content and design of the website can be edited and configured separately. Different variations and color combinations are available to the user. Website wizards and homepage templates support the user in his homepage development.

The HTML source text remains largely hidden from the (inexperienced) user and is initially generated by the software on your own computer. You can then continue working on the project outside of the software or upload the project directly from the software to a server.

The templates are written in HTML and in the metalanguage CCML (Content Composition Markup Language) and can be supplemented or transformed with specialist knowledge of in-depth source material for website creation. This contradicts the statement in the previous paragraph insofar as you can easily access the various templates and edit them permanently before generating the page.

Since version 8 the program can handle the HTML5 standard and thus enables animations that can be displayed without Flash Player . In addition, the output of a website on mobile devices and search engine optimization have been improved. Responsive designs that automatically adapt to different mobile devices are missing, however.

The current version "NG" (stands for next generation ) is online-based, whereby a Windows computer is installed to install the client to edit the website. It is not possible to take over the content as in the previous versions.

The software requires product activation . This is done via a server that is independent of Data Becker, which was originally expected to shut down on March 31, 2016. However, the server continues to run indefinitely. The server is operated by the technology provider of the copy protection (Protectdisc).

Another problem arises from the lack of compatibility of Web to Date with the latest PHP versions. The last published version 8 (s) is compatible up to PHP version 5.5, with version 5.6 the first errors in the display of websites are already showing.

End of web to date sales

When Data Becker closed its operations on March 31, 2014, the sale of web to date also ended. Thomas Henrichs, the developer of web to date, has developed the alternative software Siquando Web based on the source code of web to date, with which existing projects can be further processed and which offers a range of functions comparable to web to date.
