history

Clan Home has owned the Wedderburn estates since the 15th century . As a result of the participation of the owner George Home, 2nd baronet in the first Jacobite revolt in 1715, the clan was expropriated. After the intervention, the clan underwent rehabilitation and Wedderburn and Paxton became the property of Patrick Homes . After his marriage failed, Home sold Paxton and began building what is now Wedderburn Castle on the site of a 15th century tower house .

Construction work based on a design by the important Scottish brothers and sisters Robert and James Adam began around 1770 and continued until 1777. By the end of the century most of the outbuildings had been completed and the surrounding parks and gardens were being built. During the Second World War , Wedderburn Castle housed a naval hospital. While the castle and the directly surrounding facilities are still owned by the Home family, the formerly extensive property was partially parceled out and sold.
