Wedderlie House

Wedderlie House is a residential building near the Scottish town of Westruther in the Council Area Scottish Borders . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

In 1258 Robert de Polwarth was lord of the surrounding lands. In 1327 the property passed to Richard Edgar , whose descendants managed it for over 400 years. English gangs attacked the fortifications located there several times in the late Middle Ages. Robert Stuart, 7. Lord Blantyre acquired Wedderlie in 1733. The oldest fragments of today's Wedderlie House are believed to date from the late 16th century. In 1680, Wedderlie House was extensively expanded.

The building is isolated around 1.5 kilometers northeast of Westruther in front of the southern edge of the Lammermuir Hills . The original fortification occupies the west end of Wedderlie House. It is a three-story building with an L-shaped floor plan. The later extension on the east side also has an L-shaped floor plan. In contrast to the older part, the masonry of the extension is plastered.
