Westruther is a village in the Scottish Council Area Scottish Borders or the traditional county of Berwickshire . It is located around eleven kilometers east of Lauder on the southern flank of the Lammermuir Hills . The Blackadder Water rises not far .
history
In the area around Westruther there are three mansions of importance. Bassendean House dates back to the 17th century and is owned by the Home clan . The Spottiswoode House , which was demolished in 1939 , was based on a tower house . It was the seat of the regionally influential Spottiswoode family . Wedderlie House probably dates back to the late 16th century. However, there was presumably a defense structure at the site.
In 1649 Westruther received its own church with today's Westruther Old Parish Church . The building in the center of the village is only preserved today as a ruin. In 1838 a new church building was erected.
As part of the 1991 census survey, Westruther counted 225 inhabitants.
traffic
