Oxton is a town in the Scottish Council Area Scottish Borders or in the traditional county of Berwickshire . It is located around six kilometers northwest of Lauder in front of the southwestern edge of the Lammermuir Hills . In the north, Leader Water runs through the former Lauderdale district.
history
The settlement of the area can be traced back a long way. The remains of ramparts of a hill fort can be found on a hill to the west of the village . Also to the west are the remains of a fortified camp from the time of the Roman occupation of Britain .
A church was built in Oxton between the 7th and 9th centuries. In the 12th century, Hugh de Morville subordinated the church to Dryburgh Abbey . When the building became dilapidated in the 1810s, a new church was built in Oxton with today's Channelkirk Parish Church .
As part of the 1971 census survey, there were 167 residents in Oxton.
traffic
The A68 ( Darlington - Edinburgh ) passes directly to the east and connects the village to the trunk road network. The A697 coming from Morpeth joins a few hundred meters away .
Oxton received its own station along the Lauder Light Railway in 1901. The route connected Lauder to the Waverley Line via Oxton . However, passenger transport on the short branch line was stopped again in 1932. In 1939 the line was completely abandoned.
