Channelkirk Parish Church

The Channelkirk Parish Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland . It is located near the Scottish village of Oxton in the Scottish Borders Council Area . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 1995.

history

A church was built on the site between the 7th and 9th centuries. It was dedicated to Cuthbert of Lindisfarne . In the 12th century, Hugh de Morville subordinated the church to Dryburgh Abbey . Bishop David de Bernham consecrated the building on March 23, 1241. The cross-shaped church building has been redesigned several times over the centuries. After it was partially in ruins in 1627, the thatched roof was renewed in 1653. In 1724 the building was covered with slate for the first time. When the building became dilapidated in 1814, the pastor refused to hold services until a new church was built. The present Channelkirk Parish Church was then completed in 1817. A new rectory was built in the same construction phase.

description

Channelkirk Parish Church is isolated in the middle of the surrounding cemetery about two kilometers northwest of Oxton. Allegedly there was once a Roman fort on the site . The elongated building has a simple neo-Gothic design. Portals close with Tudor arches , while pointed-arched windows are built in. On the west gable sits a roof turret with an open bell. The bell bears the inscription "For Channonkirk 1702". It comes from a previous building.
