The northwest-southeast oriented Wedge Tomb of Kilnavert is registered on the Ordnance Survey - (OS) and the historical map as "Giants Grave". It is located in the townland of Kilnavert ( Irish Cill na bhFeart ) on a slight rise in the hill country, east of Gortnaleck Lough (lake) near Ballyconnel in County Cavan in Ireland . Wedge Tombs ( German  "Keilgräber" ), formerly also called "wedge-shaped gallery grave", are aisle-free, mostly undivided megalithic complexes from the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age in Ireland.

description

The Wedge Tomb is surrounded by trees and consists of a somewhat destroyed, approximately 3.5 m long, flat chamber, which is flanked by curbs. The chamber narrows in width from 1.5 m at the front to 1.35 m at the northern end. A ceiling tile covers everything except the rear end. There are traces of a hill measuring 11 m × 10 m.

About 2.0 m west of the north side is a facade stone and on the south side of the chamber are three outer wall stones and another 2.5 m west. In the north there are two outer wall stones, 5 m apart.

The area around Kilnavert was originally called Fossa Slécht or Rath Slécht , after which the plain of Magh Slécht ("the plain of the knee falls") was named.

The menhirs

The Menhir 1 ( English Standing Stone ) is 4.5 m north of the Wedge Tomb. It is an irregularly shaped stone about 1.76 m high, 0.80 m wide and 0.35 m thick.

Menhir 2 stands southeast of Wedge Tomb on the slope of a low drumlin. It is an irregularly shaped stone about 2.1 m high, 0.97 m wide and 0.78 m thick.
