Kilmashogue Wedge Tomb

The megalithic complexes of Kilmashogue are not far from the R116 (Edmonstown Road) in the townland of the same name Kilmashogue ( English also Kilmashoge , Irish Cill Mochióg ) on Kilmashogue Mountain ( Sliabh Chill Mochióg ) in the Dublin suburb of Rathfarnham in County Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown in Ireland . A stone box and two menhirs are nearby.

The Wedge Tomb

The Wedge Tomb of Kilmashogue is more disturbed. Wedge Tombs ( German  "Keilgräber" ), formerly also called "wedge-shaped gallery grave", are aisle-free, mostly undivided megalithic buildings from the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age . Some of the curbs are still there. The cairn that originally covered the complex is only preserved on the outside and flat there. The remains of a surrounding ditch, which was originally deeper, and a wall can be seen. The gallery of around 2000 BC The wedge tomb, which was built in BC, is rectangular (not wedge-shaped as is characteristic of the type). An antechamber is separated from the main chamber by a very high entry stone.

Some stone boxes were later built into the cairn. There are two small cuboid menhirs nearby .

The Tomb portal

Kilmashogue's collapsed Tomb portal (also known as the "Larch Hill Dolmen") is on the Scout Council of Ireland's lands and is marked as "Dolmen" on the OS map. One of the approximately 2.5 m high portal stones and a side stone are still in situ with the threshold stone in the entrance area . The remaining stones including the approximately 3.8 m long, 2.65 m wide and 0.7 m thick capstone are on the ground. Scattered around the chamber is some of the mound's stone material.

There are other megaliths in the Dublin Mountains, including the similarly disturbed Wedge Tomb by Ballyedmonduff .
