Crossroads Von-Coels-Strasse

The wayside cross of von-Coels-Strasse is on von-Coels-Strasse in the Aachen district of Eilendorf and dates to the year 1829. When Cockerill'schen Strasse, as von Coels-Strasse was called in earlier times, was expanded, it was owned by the family Kind donated and placed directly in front of their local pub at that time.

Over time, the cross was moved further towards the street. It was not until 1911 that the confluence of Nirmer Strasse and Von-Coels-Strasse was relocated to its current route. When the National Socialists wanted to remove the cross in the 1930s, the owner of the restaurant at the time drove the cross-molesters away with an ax. Nevertheless, he was spared a criminal complaint.

After various renovations, a new cross finally had to be made in 1955. Another extensive restoration took place in autumn 1988.

Today the cross stands leaning against the trunk of a mighty chestnut in front of the house at von-Coels-Straße 199.
