The cross

The wayside cross on Promenadenweg is a listed building in Nörvenich , Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

During the Second World War , the cross erected here an unknown time ago was destroyed. The cross now standing here on the promenade used to be in the Hardt. A path led from the corner of Hardtstraße and Promenadenweg to Villa Peill. This cross stood a little off this path. Only when the site was passed to the Bundeswehr did it move to its current location in 1955.

It has badly weathered lettering below the body . Apart from the name Siebert Olbertz and the year 1707 , only a few letters are recognizable. More detailed information about what happened to this Siebert Olbertz can be found in the parish's death register.

Here the pastor , translated into today's language, noted: “On June 17, 1707, the young man Siebert Olbertz, son of the estate of the lower castle, was believed to have been killed by the sudden explosion of a grenade. He was found in the Hardtwäldchen and buried here. "

The casualty probably played with ammunition lying around that soldiers had left behind and was fatally wounded in the process. This terrible event caused the parents to put up a cross at the scene of the accident. It later became one of the seven goals of the women praying for the footfalls .

During the Corpus Christi procession , the cross was decorated from the trumpeter court . From here the pastor gave the blessing with the monstrance .

The cross was entered on March 19, 1985 in the monument list of the municipality of Nörvenich under No. 41.
