White Mars

The White Mars was built from 1920 to 1932 by the Nuremberg motorcycle manufacturer Mars . They were the types Mars A20 (1920–1925), MA 25 (1925) and MA 27 (1927–1932). These motorcycles quickly became popularly known as the White Mars because of their paintwork , although they were also sold in red or green paintwork.

In addition to the engine, a special design feature was the visually dominating patented, elaborately riveted and soldered box frame with an integrated tank. In the older two-speed version, the two drive chains to the rear wheel ran along the inside of this box frame. The MA 27, on the other hand, had a three-speed gear drive integrated into the box frame , which was driven by a short chain that ran in a separate chain box on the left. The front wheel was guided in a fork with a short swing arm, the rear wheel was rigidly suspended. With a weight of 140 kg, these machines reached a speed of around 100 km / h.

Motor data

The two-cylinder boxer engine was air-cooled with a fan and installed across the frame, i.e. the crankshaft and camshaft were perpendicular to the direction of travel. It had a displacement of 956 cc, with a bore of 80 mm and a stroke of 95 mm, and initially made 7.3 hp (5.4 kW). Over the years, the output has been increased to 18 hp (13 kW). The engine designed by the engineer Claus Richard Franzenburg at Mars was manufactured by Maybach in Friedrichshafen, the subsequent improved versions in the machine factory in Immendingen, and later also by J. G. Mehne in Schwenningen am Neckar . The crankcase was made of aluminum, the sack cylinders made of gray cast iron . The crankshaft was in one piece, the connecting rods on roller bearings . For assembly, the undivided connecting rod eyes (connecting rod feet) were threaded over the crankshaft and then the rollers were pushed into the bearings through a groove in the crank web. The camshaft was above the crankshaft and operated the standing valves long lever: an intake cam via the inlets drag lever , an exhaust outlets above the rocker arm . The engine was started with a hand crank that was attached to the camshaft on the left side of the engine. To prevent the cylinder at the rear from overheating, a hand-operated oil pump with its own oil tank was provided on the left side of the frame. This provided additional targeted cylinder lubrication, especially on inclines.

Use as a racing machine

The plant also built very successful racing versions of these machines for use in motorsport. Ernst Schulz and Heinz Wilhelm, as works racing drivers, achieved first and second places in the Bavarian championship in 1921 and were also successful in the races on the Velodrome at Reichelsdorfer Keller in Nuremberg. The Göhler brothers from Karlsruhe became very well known as team drivers on a White Mars.

White Mars is rare today. Replicas of the White Mars are made at classic-racing-motorcycles .
