The site of the former Weißenburg lies in the district of Tunzenhausen and thus belongs to Sömmerda in Thuringia .

geography

The Weißenburg is located on a level elevation in the fertile Thuringian Basin next to the Unstrut northwest of Sömmerda on the state road 1054 to Weißensee and Runneburg .

history

The Weißenburg was named in 1211 with the siege of the nearby Runneburg. It was destroyed and rebuilt in 1248 in order to be able to exercise the protective function for the national festivals again. Layers of ash, ceramic shards, bones and iron remains were found on these areas of the former Weißenburg in the district of Tunzenhausen. The castle at that time was probably from prehistoric times. Three of the trenches in front of the main ramparts can still be seen on an aerial photo. Arched ramparts secured the castle grounds to the north to the higher plain. Otherwise, the historical development was essentially influenced by the development of the city of Sömmerda, so that the importance of the castle location steadily decreased.

Weißenburg today

The Wulf tree nursery, the animal shelter and the Sömmerda riding stables are located there today .
