The Weißstirn-Zwergohreule ( Otus sagittatus ) is an owl from the genus of scops owl . It occurs on the Malay Peninsula .

description

The length is 25 to 28 centimeters with a weight of 110 to 140 grams. The upper side is deep red-brown or yellow-brown with dull yellow to white colored spots on the coat and back. The underside is light reddish brown with fine brown scratches on the chest and throat. The white forehead, which merges sideways into the long feather ears, is striking on the light reddish brown face. The dark brown eyes are surrounded by a wide, deep maroon ring. The beak is bluish white, the wax skin light blue-green. The legs are feathered reddish brown, the flesh-colored toes have bluish white claws.

Way of life

It inhabits evergreen lowland rainforests , but also degraded swampy forests up to 700 meters above sea level. It lives on insects, mainly moths. The call is a dull huuuu repeated at long intervals that begins and ends abruptly.

distribution

The species is distributed from Tenasserim to the tip of the Malay Peninsula. It is considered rare and is classified as endangered by BirdLife International due to extensive deforestation in its range .
