The Hagen bush kangaroo ( Dorcopsis hageni ), also known as the white stripe bush kangaroo , is a species of kangaroo belonging to the group of bush kangaroos . It lives in the lowlands of northern New Guinea .
features
The Hagen bush kangaroo reaches a head-trunk length of 42 to 60 cm, a tail length of 31.5 to 38 cm and a weight of 5 to 6 kilograms. The coat of the Hagen bush kangaroo is short, thin and very variable in color. It is light brown to dark blackish-brown, sometimes gray on the back and whitish on the belly. The undercoat is white. Typical of the species is a light, whitish to light brown back stripe that runs from the head to the base of the tail. The limbs and tail are lighter than the body and even more hairy. The tip of the tail is hairless and occasionally white.
Habitat and way of life
The Hagen bush kangaroo inhabits primary and secondary tropical lowland rainforests, and also goes into human-influenced biotopes e.g. B. in overgrown gardens. It is twilight and partly diurnal. It retreats into dense vegetation to sleep. Little is known about diet. It is likely that its diet is mainly plant-based; it has been proven that it consumes mushrooms that grow underground. According to information from locals, it also eats invertebrates. The females have a single cub per year. Reproduction takes place all year round.
Danger
The Hagen bush kangaroo is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN , because it has a relatively large distribution area and is still quite rich in individuals.
