The Wellington Column or Waterloo Memorial is a memorial on William Brown Street in Liverpool . It was built in honor of the 1st Duke of Wellington between 1861 and 1865, who won many battles during the Napoleonic Wars .

The column, which was designed by George Anderson Lawton from Glasgow , is architecturally reminiscent of the Doric style . The bronze figure depicting the Duke of Wellington stands on the tall sandstone column and a pedestal. The total height of the column is approximately 40 meters (132 feet ). On the four sides of the base there are reliefs showing the duke's great battles and victories. Including the Battle of Talavera , the Battle of Vitoria , the Siege of Badajoz and the Battle of Waterloo .

The statue was cast from French cannons that were taken away in Waterloo after the battle. It was oriented to the south-west towards Waterloo so that Wellington could always see its most important battlefield.
