The Wellington Museum , known as the Museum of Wellington City & Sea until May 2015 , is a New Zealand museum about the history of the city of Wellington and its surroundings. It is located in the Bond Store , built in 1892 , a historic building on Jervois Quay in Wellington Harbor's waterfront .

history

The museum was originally designed as a maritime museum by the Wellington Port Authority in 1972 . With the restructuring of public facilities in New Zealand, which began in 1989, the Wellington City Council decided to expand the exhibition spectrum to include the social and cultural history of the region. The conversion of the building into the Museum of Wellington City & Sea was completed in 1999. It is run by the Museums Trust . The museum was renamed the Wellington Museum in May 2015 at a cost of NZ $ 30,000 .

Subjects of the museum

The By the Sea we Live section shows the city's maritime history, while Te Whanganui-a-Tara covers the history of the Māori and European settlement. An exhibition about the 20th century gives visitors an impression of Wellington's development over the past hundred years. A series of films about Wellington's history are shown on a big screen . This section of the exhibition is divided into the section Myths of the Māori , the other is dedicated to the commemoration of the ferry accident on the Wahine ferry in the port of Wellington . The attached exhibition shows Plimmer's Ark , the remains of a sailing ship from 1848, which was discovered during renovations between 1997 and 1999 in the Old Bank Arcade .
