The Welschlauf has been an annual running event in southern Styria since 1995 . In addition to the classic route over the marathon distance, there is also a half marathon and a quarter marathon over 10.8 km, which is also held as a Nordic Walker competition.
The run is always held on the first Saturday in May, with the direction of the run changing annually. The name Welschlauf stands for “Wies-Ehrenhausen-run and look” as well as based on the route that connects the Welsch region with the Schilcher region.
route
The marathon route - depending on the direction of travel - leads from Wies to Ehrenhausen and has an altitude of 1,440 or 1,330 meters . For the other distances there is a later entry in Leutschach or Sulztal . Long parts of the route lead along the South Styrian wine routes . There are 21 refreshment stations along the running route. The running route is closed during the event (local roads in full, state and federal roads in part) and signposted in both directions all year round.
particularities
- Team evaluation: In the “Gretzl” competition, 5 runners start at one and the same distance and are also evaluated together. For the award ceremony on the running day, the slowest time applies to the entire Gretzl.
- Masked runners: A jury evaluates the best masked team and the best masked individual runner.
- At some refreshment stations, not only isotonic drinks, but also wine from the region are served.
