World Sign Language Day

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The World Day of sign language ( English International Day of Sign Languages , formerly Day of the Deaf ) is an international day of action , which is held annually on 23 September. It was launched in 1951 by the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD - World Association of the Deaf ), which was officially confirmed by the United Nations in 2018 at the suggestion of the WFD.

It has been celebrated in Germany since the mid-1970s. The regional deaf associations often organize a day of action on the occasion of the Deaf Day, which usually takes place on different Saturdays in September and October. They use it every year as an opportunity to draw attention to the situation of around 80,000 deaf people nationwide and to promote sign language .
