Wembley Festival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Festival of Country Music was launched in 1968 by the concert promoter Mervyn Conn. Every Easter weekend, top-class country musicians met in London's Wembley Stadium , initially for two, later for three and four days.

The Wembley Festival, as it was commonly known, was so successful that in 1979 offshoots were founded in various European countries, including Germany (first concert in 1979 in the Frankfurter Festhalle ), Norway, the Netherlands and Finland. The broad media coverage also contributed to the success. The London BBC in particular reported extensively on both radio and television. The festival also had an excellent reputation in the USA. Many big stars, such as Johnny Cash , Roy Orbison or Emmylou Harris, did not shy away from the long journey to Europe. Some, like Boxcar Willie , made their breakthrough here.

The Wembley Festival last took place in the early 1990s.
