The Werbener See is a lake about 20 kilometers southwest of Leipzig that was created as part of the recultivation of the overburden area of a lignite opencast mine on the southern edge of the municipality of Kitzen .
It is an intermediate residual hole in the Profen-Nord opencast mining area and named after the Werben district of Kitzen, on the eastern edge of which it is located. It has a size of 79 hectares and extends oblong in an east-west direction with a length of approx. 800 and a width of approx. 100 m.
From 1998 to 2000 it was flooded with swamp water from the Profen opencast mine and then left to be filled with groundwater . In May 2012 the water level was 124.27 m above sea level. NHN. The final water level at the end of the flooding is 127.80 m above sea level. Above sea level, but can only be reached very slowly due to the withdrawal of groundwater by the neighboring active open-cast mine Profen.
The lake has a volume of approximately 9.3 million cubic meters with an average depth of 12 meters and a maximum depth of 32 meters.
The diving club Borna eV has leased the lake as diving water. It also serves as a fishing area for anglers.
The Werben open-cast mine is owned by Agrarprodukte Kitzen eG, which has also drawn up certain rules of conduct for staying on this site.
