The works fire fighter is a state-recognized training occupation in Germany according to the Vocational Training Act (BBiG) . The training period is three years. Training takes place at the company and vocational school .

The professional competence in this profession is determined by a long final examination. An intermediate examination does not take place.
Part 1 of the final examination takes place before the end of the second year of training, part 2 at the end of the training. Part 1 of the final examination is weighted with 40% in this profession, part 2 with a total of 60%.

The final examination consists of a total of five examination areas:

  1. Examination area "craft work"
  2. Examination area "Fire fighting"
  3. Examination area "Technical assistance and ABC use"
  4. Examination area "Basics and techniques of hazard prevention"
  5. Examination area "Economics and Social Studies"

Examination area "craft work"

In this examination area, the trainee should prove that he

a) evaluate technical documents, determine technical parameters, plan and coordinate work processes, dispose of materials and tools,
b) Manufacture workpieces, check functions, explain his procedure and document work carried out,
c) Adhere to safety rules, accident prevention regulations and environmental protection regulations, and
d) Recognize hazards, be able to take measures to eliminate them.

The trainee carries out work tasks about which he conducts an order-related technical discussion. Furthermore, he has to solve written tasks. The trainee has a total of 600 minutes for this work. During this time, he should complete the work tasks and the technical discussion in 420 minutes. The technical discussion takes a maximum of 10 minutes. 180 minutes are allotted for the written processing of the tasks.

Examination area "Fire fighting"

In this examination area, the trainee should prove that he

a) drive and manned class C fire engines and emergency rescue vehicles on public roads,
b) handle resources,
c) assess potential hazards,
d) Carry out self-protection, observe accident prevention regulations, and
e) can investigate the situation on site and report back to the situation.

The trainee completes two work samples and conducts an order-related technical discussion. The trainee has a total of 90 minutes available for this work, of which a maximum of 10 minutes for the technical discussions.

Examination area "Technical assistance and ABC use"

In this examination area, the trainee should demonstrate that he is performing functions and tasks in tactical fire brigade units in accordance with fire brigade service regulations and in doing so

a) handle resources,
b) assess potential hazards,
c) Perform self-protection, observe accident prevention regulations, and
d) can explore the situations on site and report back to the situation.

The trainee completes two work samples and conducts an order-related technical discussion. The trainee has a total of 90 minutes available for this work, of which a maximum of 10 minutes for the technical discussions.

Examination area "Basics and techniques of hazard prevention"

In this examination area, the trainee should prove that he

a) explain the legal principles of fire services ,
b) assess the incidence of fire, select and use extinguishing agents and methods,
c) differentiate between vehicles and equipment,
d) use respiratory protection,
e) Take into account deployment theory, as well as
f) can apply knowledge of preventive fire protection.

The trainee works on written assignments in 240 minutes.

Examination area "Economics and Social Studies"

In this examination area, the trainee should demonstrate in 60 minutes that he is able to present and assess general economic and social relationships in the professional and working world.

Weighting of the examination areas

The examination areas are weighted as follows:

Craft work 30 percent
Fire fighting 20 percent
Technical assistance and ABC use 20 percent
Basics and techniques of security 20 percent
Economics and Social Studies 10 percent

Passage regulation

The trainee has passed his final exam if the performance

  1. in the overall result of part 1 and part 2 of the final examination with at least "sufficient",
  2. in the result of part 2 of the final examination with at least "sufficient"
  3. in the examination areas "fire fighting" as well as "technical assistance and NBC use" with at least sufficient,
  4. in at least one of the remaining examination areas of part 2 of the final examination with at least "sufficient" and
  5. in no examination area of ​​part 2 of the final examination with "unsatisfactory"

An oral supplementary examination of around 15 minutes in duration is possible in the examination areas “Fundamentals and techniques of hazard prevention” or “Economics and social studies” if the final examination can be passed. The prerequisite is that these examination areas were rated worse than "sufficient". A supplementary oral examination to improve the grade is not possible.

Testing regulation

With the apprenticeship as a plant fire fighter as a dual training occupation, new territory is broken. The training regulations are therefore being tested, ie the currently applicable training regulations came into force on August 1, 2009 and ceased to apply on July 31, 2016. This time was used to check the acceptance and tailoring of the training occupation and to make changes if necessary.
