Werner Schaal

Werner Georg Hans Schaal (born April 20, 1934 in Berlin ) is a German mathematician. He was a professor at the Philipps University in Marburg , where he was president for many years.

education and profession

After receiving his doctorate in 1961 at the University of Göttingen and holding positions at the University of Bonn and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , Cambridge, USA, he returned to the Philipps University of Marburg . Schaal held a professorship in the mathematics and computer science department from 1970 to 1989, was dean three times during this time, was then elected vice-president of the Alma Mater Philippina and then held the office of president from 1994 until his retirement in 2000.

Schaal was also committed to an academic collaboration between the Philipps University of Marburg and the Lucian Blaga University in Sibiu ( Hermannstadt , Romania). From 2000 to 2012, Schaal was the honorary president of the Lucian Blaga University .

Honors

Schaal was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class on February 25, 2009 . The award recognizes Schaal's work as President of the Lucian Blaga University. Schaal was also honored for other voluntary activities such as chairing the advisory board of the Christoph Dornier Foundation and working in committees of the University Rectors' Conference. On December 11, 2018, Schaal was awarded the Ordinul Naţional “Pentru Merit” în grad de “Ofiţer” by Romanian President Klaus Johannis .
