Werner Schiendl

Werner Schiendl (* 1943 in Vienna ) is an author of railway history books and an activist for historical (museum) railways in Austria .

Life

After completing his law studies as a Dr. iur. The professional career led from bank credit specialist through several functions in the Federal Chancellery and the Federal Ministry for Buildings and Technology to activity as commercial director of Autobahn and Schnellstraßen AG, one of the predecessor companies of today's ASFINAG and most recently as Ministerialrat in the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and from 2000 in Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (until 2002). Since 1977 he has been the author of numerous publications on the history of the Austrian narrow-gauge railways as well as co-founder and long-time president of the “Austrian Society for Local Railways” (1983–2019), where he was in charge of the construction of the two Lower Austrian historical railways, the “ Höllentalbahn ” from 1977 and the “ Ybbstalbahn ” mountain line “Worked from 1990. For these activities as a cultural mediator, he was awarded the title "Professor" by the Federal President in 2011. Schiendl has been chairman of the ÖMT Association of Austrian Museum and Touristic Railways since 2012.
