Western Canal (Arizona)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Western Canal is a canal in Maricopa County in the US state of Arizona .

The Western Canal collects some streams that originally ended in the Salt River and diverts this water in a northerly direction. The canal network, built as an irrigation canal system for agricultural purposes, branches south of the city of Mesa : the western branch remains as the Western Canal , the eastern branch forms the approximately 12 km long Consolidated Canal , smaller irrigation canals derived from it were sacrificed for road and settlement development.

The canal was built by the Western Canal Construction Company in 1912 and 1913 and began operating in 1913.

Flood events occurred almost every year as a result of heavy rainfall and the low gradient in the neighboring districts.
