The Westsächsische Zeitung first appeared in print in 2008 in Zwickau . After only a few months it was clear that the concept could not last long due to the high production and distribution costs. That is why the decision was made shortly afterwards to stop printing and use the online version only.

Facebook opened up new ways of spreading news. The number of hits increased, but the general acceptance in the population was only achieved in September 2017. Back then, a single article generated well over 35,000 clicks. That was more than the print edition of the Free Press had in circulation.

A new editorial office was opened in Zwickau at the beginning of 2020. The Westsächsische Zeitung is now being published again as a printed edition at irregular intervals. The frequency of publication and circulation vary depending on the budget. The online edition last received almost 200,000 clicks in May 2020 with a contribution to the Zwickau justice scandal.
