WhatsUp Gold is software . It offers a number of integrated modules for network , host and service monitoring. A Windows user interface and a web interface can be used to configure and query the collected data. This data is saved in an MS SQL database.
The main features of the software are:
- determines all active network components
- Visualization and documentation of the network
- informs about problems in the network
- collects network information over time and summarizes it in reports
Overview
The hosts to be monitored and other devices are made known to WhatsUp Gold by means of a network scan or manual assignment. Combining them into static and dynamic groups for individual hosts makes it easier to organize the objects. A Windows and web interface are available for administration. Alternatively, the database can also be accessed directly.
WhatsUp Gold can query and evaluate the status of various services (e.g. HTTP , HTTPS , SSH , FTP ) as well as hard drive space, memory and CPU utilization, uptime , etc. via WMI , SNMP , TCP , UDP or SSL . ICMP , Netbios and IPX are available for “polling” the various devices . In addition, the file system, registry and numerous other objects can be accessed using scripting .
This enables WhatsUp Gold to monitor and record network services, Windows NT services, event logs , syslog events and the utilization of system resources in real time. In addition, load peaks, bandwidth problems and the availability of HTTPS pages are detected.
As soon as a monitored value exceeds a defined threshold value or can no longer be reached, previously defined activities (e.g. e-mail , SMS , pager , ActionScript, web alarm, etc.) are triggered. A redundant design using cluster technology is possible, a "failover" can be implemented using scripting. Due to the client-less approach, it is not necessary to install special software on the remote systems, but by means of scripting remote systems can be accessed or any tools can be executed. SNMP- capable devices can be comprehensively monitored with the help of the integration of any MIB files.
Reports
In addition to alerting, a key aspect of network monitoring is the processing of collected data in order to identify trends and correlations when analyzing the IT landscape. WhatsUp Gold summarizes the various reports in the following groups:
- System: system-level and global reports, such as B. Action Log, General Error, Passive Monitor Errors, Performance Monitor Error, SNMP Trap, Syslog Entries, Windows Events, Active Discovery, Activity, Home Workspace, Recurring Action, Recurring Report, Web User Activity
- Group: Shows and compares the performance and availability data of freely definable groups, such as B. CPU utilization, hard disk capacity, response time, active monitor outage, status etc.
- Device: Special reports for a dedicated device, e.g. B. Hard disk capacity, status changes, syslog , SNMP trap, etc.
- Performance: Compilation of utilization statistics, e.g. B. response times, availabilities, user-defined key figures, etc.
- Problem Area: Subdivision of special problem areas, such as B. Performance error logs, various event logs, general error logs, error traps, etc.
In workspaces, reports and maps can be combined as required within the web interface. By using Ajax , the web interface works in a similar way to a Windows interface.
