Whirlpool Rapids
The Whirlpool Rapids are extremely strong rapids of the Niagara River, which are located about five kilometers downstream (north) of Niagara Falls . At this point, which makes Niagara Gorge (ger .: Niagara River Gorge ) due to the geological conditions of the ground a sharp bend of about 90 degrees, forcing the river, its flow direction from north-west to north-east to change. Long-distance swimmer Matthew Webb died in 1883 while attempting to swim the Whirlpool Rapids .
On the Canadian side, the gorge is spanned by the Whirlpool Aero Car cable car, built in 1916 . To the east of the Rapids, in the United States, is Whirlpool State Park .
