The Whirlpool Rapids are extremely strong rapids of the Niagara River, which are located about five kilometers downstream (north) of Niagara Falls . At this point, which makes Niagara Gorge (ger .: Niagara River Gorge ) due to the geological conditions of the ground a sharp bend of about 90 degrees, forcing the river, its flow direction from north-west to north-east to change. At this kink, an almost circular pool was created - the Niagara whirlpool . The water depth in the rapids is up to 10.7 meters and the flow speed up to 35.4 km / h. The hot tub rapids of Niagara are among the wildest, most impressive and most dangerous white water in the world ( category 6).

Long-distance swimmer Matthew Webb died in 1883 while attempting to swim the Whirlpool Rapids .

On the Canadian side, the gorge is spanned by the Whirlpool Aero Car cable car, built in 1916 . To the east of the Rapids, in the United States, is Whirlpool State Park .
