Whiskey Creek Cabin is a rustic log cabin in southwest Oregon in the United States . It is located on Whiskey Creek, a northern tributary to the Rogue River in the section where the National Wild and Scenic River is designated. The building is the oldest mining hut still in existence in the valley of the river. The Bureau of Land Management bought the cabin and surrounding land in 1973. The Whiskey Creek Cabin was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

history

The log cabin was built by an unknown miner around 1880. The original structure was very simple and consisted of four walls, a floor made of rammed earth and a wooden roof. A moat was built nearby around 1890 to panning for gold at Whiskey Creek. This trench begins about 1500 meters further upstream and flows behind the tool shed. In 1905 the trench was extended to about 15 meters before the mouth of the creek. This trench also supplied the hut with drinking water.

The first registered mining right at Whiskey Creek was filed in 1917 by a PH Rushmore. Rushmore sold his rights a year later to Cy Whiteneck, who stayed here for the next thirty years. He improved the hut by adding a wooden floor and a second room. Whiteneck also built various sheds nearby. Over the years Whiteneck panned gold from the Creek, but did not get rich.

Whiteneck sold his property to LM Nichols and his wife in 1948. Nichols later hired Lou Martin to act as the owner's administrator. He continued to search for gold in the Creek during the sixteen years that he lived here. He also improved the hut. He built the solar-heated shower and the larger walk-in pantry next to the hut. He also constructed a material ropeway to carry firewood across the stream. To do this, he laid a roughly 145-meter long half-inch steel cable across the river and tensioned it with a system of hand-operated winches and levers. Martin remained in the position of administrator until the property was sold to the Bureau of Land Management in 1973. The Bureau of Land Management set up information boards in 1973 and made it possible to visit the hut. Due to the importance of the site as the oldest existing mining hut in the Rogue River Canyon, the Whiskey Creek Cabin was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 5, 1975. Apart from the cabin is located on the 20 acre (about 80 Ar ) large area yet another contributing structure.

Because of its isolated location, the hut has changed little since 1973 when the last resident moved out. It is a one-story log cabin with two rooms and an adjoining pantry. A veranda each runs the full length of the building on the front and back. They are carried by wooden trunks. The floor of the hut is made of fir wood planks and the roof is covered with galvanized corrugated iron . The pantry has double walls with sawdust insulation between the inner and outer walls.

There are two sheds on site, a large tool shed is directly behind the hut, and another shed for a power generator is a short distance to the north. There is a solar heated shower, constructed by the last resident of the hut, located between the tool shed and the hut itself.

location

Historic Whiskey Creek Cabin on the Rogue River

The Whiskey Creek Cabin is located in the Rogue River Cañon in southern Oregon and is about 195 m above sea level. It lies in a secluded spot on the river and is surrounded by the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest .

The hut can only be reached by driving on the river or by hiking the path in its valley. The starting point is Grave Creek, about six kilometers west of the historic Rand Ranger Station . From there it is about five kilometers to the hut on Whiskey Creek, which is about 400 meters above its confluence with the Rogue River. The place where the hut is located is a popular resting place for hikers and people drifting down the river, which is why there is a simple campsite at the mouth of Whiskey Creek .
