The Vienna Great Alliance against Louis XIV of France came into being in 1689 when England and the Netherlands under William of Orange formed the Augsburg alliance between Emperor Leopold I , King Charles II of Spain , King Charles XI. of Sweden, Elector Maximilian II. Emanuel of Bavaria and various other imperial estates joined.

The aim of the Great Vienna Alliance was to maintain the agreements of the Peace of Westphalia and the Peace of the Pyrenees . This alliance dissolved with the Peace of Rijswijk in 1697, but as early as 1701, during the War of the Spanish Succession, the Empire, England and the Netherlands formed a new alliance against France ( Hague Grand Alliance ).
