Vienna Rowing Club Danube Federation

The Wiener Ruder Club Donaubund (WRC Donaubund) is an Austrian rowing club based in Vienna . The Danube Federation was a pioneer in matters of women's rights . Founded three weeks after the proclamation of the Republic of Austria, it continues to focus on competitive sports and recreational rowing today .

history

The club was founded in 1878 as the 1st Viennese ladies and gentlemen rowing company "Donaubund" . During the First World War, activities ceased. On December 18, 1918, the club was re-established under its current name as the first rowing club in what is now the Republic of Austria.

In the WRC, women were allowed to row long before they were officially given the right to vote . On January 12th, 1919 an article appeared in the Allgemeine Sport-Zeitung in Vienna: “These days a new rowing club has been launched in Vienna. Its founder and board member is Otto Engelberger's eldest son. (…) This summer, ladies rowing also found its way into the Old Danube; three teams of four have already been trained under the direction of director Engelberger. (...) At the moment he [the association] has 16 female and 12 male members. (…) “ The WRC was the only rowing club in Austria that led a women's team after the First World War.

  • 2003 Nora Labes - Austrian student championship bronze medal in single, Austrian junior women championship silver medal in single, Viennese national champion in single
  • 2005 Viennese national champion in Lgw M 1x Alex Scherschnev
  • 2006 the most successful season in club history to date with over 100 victories; 3 Austrian Masters championship title, Matthias Jaksch - Viennese national champion in junior single

accident

On June 21, 2007, there was a tragic accident. A 20-ton tree supported the clubhouse during storms and killed a woman. The house was badly damaged. The members tried to rebuild.
