Wikimapia is a web interface that combines (satellite) maps with a limited wiki system without hypertext functions. It allows the user to add information in the form of a note to any position on earth. Rectangles and polygons are drawn on the map and labeled in up to 64 languages. The project was founded by Alexander Korjakin and Yevgeny Savelyev and started on May 24, 2006. In addition to the satellite maps from Google Maps (standard setting), there is also the option of switching to other maps from Google, Bing, OpenStreetMap and Yahoo (top right below the search).

Sponsorship

There is neither an imprint nor a reference to the organizational structure on the site. Only in the user conditions one finds the note “ The website is controlled and offered by Wikimapia from its facilities in the United States of America ” without further details. The domain wikimapia.org has been registered for JSV KOMANDA (Alexandre Koriakine, Evgeniy Saveliev) in Moscow since January 26, 2006 .

Nothing more is known about the business model and the goals of the founders, at least the service generates income via Google Adsense advertising.

Wikimapia is not affiliated with Wikipedia or the Wikimedia Foundation . The initiators say it was inspired by Wikipedia.

The recorded data has been offered under the free license CC-BY-SA since 2012 .

history

In the original implementation , there were no registered users and no administrative hierarchy. Anyone could edit anonymously, and there were no mechanisms to monitor or discipline problem users.

Such a registration system was introduced on October 8, 2006. Users who are registered for more than three days can also perform administrative tasks such as changing the position and size of objects, deleting and protecting. Points are awarded for adding, checking and correcting entries. Depending on the number of points, there are further rights that privileged members can withdraw without discussion.
