Wild ARMs ( Japanese ワ イ ル ド ア ー ム ズ Wairudo Āmuzu , German for 'wild weapons' ) is a computer role-playing game series developed by Media Vision for the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 and published by Sony itself. These are role-playing games of the Japanese type , that is, the player follows a linear plot that he can hardly influence and has to master many random battles in the course of the adventure (opponents attack without warning, they are not visible in the game world).

Gameplay

Special feature of the series: The player must constantly solve brain teasers in the many caves, vaults and forests that he explores in the game in order to progress. Sometimes switches have to be thrown, sometimes boxes have to be moved to certain places, sometimes there are skill tasks to be solved. Often puzzles can only be solved with the use of certain “tools”. As the adventure progresses, each character will find some tools that are tailored to their needs, such as bombs, knives, lighter, or even a rat.

The planet Filgaia is a slowly dying world. More and more regions are gradually turning into dead steppes and deserts, where life is no longer possible. All Wild ARMs games are set in this world, including the first part. The many cities and characters are inspired by Western films; corresponding western music accompanies the scenario.

The plot: Demons under the leadership of Lord Zeikfried want to awaken their diabolical mother, who is vegetating in a sleeping tank. Zeikfried and his subordinates develop a plan. This is where the three characters Rudy, Jack and Cecilia come into play, who ultimately try to stand up to the demons: Rudy is a young adventurer, Jack is a treasure hunter and Cecilia is an unhappy princess. At the beginning of the game, the player only controls one character at a time to get to know the heroes and their skills. But after a few hours of play, the three heroes find each other and set off together. Only on a few occasions in the game do they separate to help each other in the ramified labyrinths.

In the game, the tour group explores the game world and is constantly looking for new cities and labyrinths. Special feature: Every character has special abilities: Rudy can plant bombs to blow up obstacles; Jack can send his Windmouse Hanpan to hit switches far away, for example; Cecilia, for example, can turn back time with her stopwatch. In almost every room there is a puzzle to solve in order to progress. Each character learns additional skills as the game progresses.

The Wild ARMs game world is shown in 2D bitmap graphics. As soon as a random battle begins (in dungeons, castles, open plains or forests, opponents attack without warning), the game changes to a 3D battle arena. Battles are turn-based; the player gives each character an order such as attack, defense, use item or use of magic per combat round. Each time a combat action is carried out, an action bar is charged on the active character. If the bar is at 25%, the character can use the first special attacks. More powerful attacks are possible when the bar is filled.

Wild ARMs is not reinventing the Japanese RPG genre , but has become very popular thanks to the Western style, the very nice graphics at the time and the neat storyline.
