William I (Besalú)
William I the Fat ( Catalan Guillem el Gras ; † 1052 ) was a Count of Besalú from the House of Barcelona . He was the eldest son of Count Bernard I Taillefer († 1020) and his wife Toda.
In 1017 Wilhelm accompanied his father to Rome , where they asked Pope Benedict VIII to found a diocese in Besalú, whose younger brother Wilfried was to be appointed its first bishop . The Pope granted the request. Except for a few donations from the monastery, little is known of Wilhelm. He died in 1052 and was buried in the Abbey of Santa Maria de Ripoll .
He was married to a woman named Adalaiz; her children were:
- William II (1070), Count of Besalú.
- Bernard II (1100), Count of Besalú.
