William III. (Weimar)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William III. ( Wilhelmi Thuringorum pretor ; † April 16, 1039 ) was Count of Weimar from 1003 and Count in Eichsfeld from 1022 .

He was the youngest son of Count Wilhelm II from Weimar . After his death, he followed in Weimar and gained the count's rights in Eichsfeld. So he came into conflict with the Archbishops of Mainz. He was on the best of terms with the king. From time to time he took over the watch over the Meissen Castle. In 1017 he was in dispute with Gebhard von Querfurt , which the King of Allstedt arbitrated. Under Wilhelm, the power of the House of Weimar reached its climax within the Thuringian area, which was partly facilitated by the penetration of the Ekkehardines into the margrave area.

Marriages and children

  • His first marriage was to Bertha.
  • Second marriage to Oda (presumably daughter of Margrave Thietmar II von der Lausitz). They had the children:
    • Wilhelm IV († 1062); Margrave of Meissen since 1046
    • Otto I. († 1067); Count of Orlamünde
    • Poppo († after 1046)
    • Aribo († 1070 murdered)

After Wilhelm's death, Oda married Dedo II , Count von Wettin.
