Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, or Vis Moot for short, is an international moot court in which commercial cases are simulated before an arbitration tribunal .

The Vis Moot was first held in Vienna in 1994 . It is named after Willem Cornelis Vis (1924–1993), who at the time was a renowned expert in international trade disputes and arbitration. Around 250 teams from more than 60 countries are now taking part. Since 2003 there has been a sister event in Hong Kong with the same issues, which is why many teams take part in both events one after the other.

Two participants from the teams appear for the plaintiff or the defendant, write opposing pleadings and negotiate before a three-member arbitral tribunal consisting of renowned arbitrators, professors and lawyers. Submissions and oral pleadings are assessed separately from each other and written exclusively in English. After submitting the pleadings, the individual teams usually take part in many preparatory events, where they also compete against teams from other universities.

The Vis Moot is now the world's largest and most renowned civil law moot court. In recent years, the preparation of many teams has become significantly more professional, which is made possible by the fact that commercial law firms and companies support the teams financially.
