Kaoru Ueda
Kaoru Ueda ( Japanese 上 田 薫 , Ueda Kaoru; born 1928 in Tōkyō ; died 2001 ) was a Japanese painter of the Yōga direction during the Shōwa and Heisei periods . He became known for his hyper-realistic pictures.
life and work
At the request of his parents, Kaoru Ueda attended the Gakushūin aristocratic school and passed the entrance examination for studying medicine at the University of Chiba . But his inclination to become an artist was very great, and so, after discussions with the first director of the newly founded National Museum of Western Art , Tominaga Sōichi (富 永 惣 一; 1902–1980), he began studying at the "Tōkyō bijutsu semmon gakkō" , today's Geidai .
After completing his studies, Ueda fell ill with TB, but was then able to go to America in 1956, where he won a prize at the international poster competition of the Hollywood company Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer . In 1958 he had a solo exhibition at the Minami Gallery, which advocated modern art. Pierre Soulages and Hans Hartung and other artists of the direction influenced him, who now also turned to abstract art. In order to make a living, however, he had to run a graphic design studio. So it happened that he could not be artistically active for a decade.
When Ueda was over forty, he began to do art again. He now created hyper-realistic images with themes from the environment, such as ice cream, jam, jelly, spoons, cups, eggs, water. According to his own statement, Ueda made use of techniques that he had developed during his time as a designer. At the "Japan - Tradition and Present Exhibition" in 1974 in Düsseldorf, he showed "Frauenschuhe" (1971), "Dirty Shoes" (1972), "Expired Soles" (1972) and "A Glass of Water" (1973) painted in this way. .
In 1985 Ueda became a professor at the University of Ibaraki and from 1992 at the Yamano College of Aesthetics (山野 美容 藝術 短期 大学; Yamano biyō geijutsu-tankidaigaku) in Tokyo Prefecture , to which he was a visiting professor after 1999.
