The War of the Two Kings ( Irish Cogadh an Dá Rí ) was a military conflict in Ireland between William III. (William of Orange) and Jacob II , who lasted from 1688 to 1691. The war was the result of the Glorious Revolution . In English historiography it is known as the Williamite War in Ireland or the Jacobite War in Ireland .

The war was fought on the territory of Ireland. Goal of Wilhelm III. was to regain control of the third kingdom of Britain as England and Scotland already recognized him as king and were under his control. James II expected long hostilities and the transition of the area of operations from Ireland to Great Britain and the return to the English throne. But the confident victory of Wilhelm III. forced James II to leave his troops at the Battle of the Boyne and flee to France . After that his troops were defeated again at Aughrim and they finally surrendered in Limerick .
