Win (baseball)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A win (indicated with a W ) is a counting statistic for pitchers in baseball . It will be credited to the pitcher who was in the game at the moment when his later winning team last took the lead with a run . This pitcher is the winning pitcher for this game.

The exception here is that a starting pitcher must have played at least five half-innings in order to be credited with the win. If the starting pitcher has not achieved this, but was still on the field for the last lead, the win is awarded to one of the relief pitchers.

In every baseball game there is always exactly one winning pitcher and one losing pitcher , these two are called pitchers of record. A pitcher of record can never get a save .

The sum of all wins and losses are usually stated together and called the pitching record. For example, if a pitcher has a pitching record of 14-8, he has received 14 wins and has been debited with 8 losses. This pitching record can be specified for individual seasons, but also for the entire career.
