Winckler memorial

The Winckler monument in Kattowitz (Pl. Katowice) was unveiled in memory of the mining entrepreneur Franz von Winckler on August 28, 1853.

Friedrich Wilhelm Grundmann , long-time employee and friend of Winckler, put a grave monument in the park of the old castle , at the place where his company was administered. The design for the antiquing monument came from the Berlin sculptor Theodor Kalide (1801–1863), who was supported by his brother-in-law Winckler. The monument was primarily architectural and consisted of a memorial stone made of marble in the form of a truncated pyramid (or obelisk) on a pedestal above a three-tiered substructure. The stone monument was complemented by bronzes: the obelisk's front was decorated with a bas-relief portrait of Winckler and an inscription; two allegorical bas-reliefs were made on its side surfaces. The monument was crowned by an antique bowl.

Around 1945 the memorial was completely destroyed due to the erection of a political monument at this location.
