Wind-up phenomenon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The wind-up phenomenon describes spinal processes that lead to central hypersensitivity or hyperalgesia and thus to a persistent increase in pain . The role of the N -methyl- D -aspartate receptors ( NMDA receptors ) is seen as the most important factor in its development.

Diseases in which wind-up phenomena are likely to play a role include anesthesia dolorosa , fibromyalgia and chronic idiopathic facial pain .
