Wind detection system

A wind alarm system (WMA) uses sensors to measure wind direction and speed and automatically transmits this data in real time to a measurement or control system and to hazard alarm systems such as those used by Deutsche Bahn .

Layout and function

Wind detection systems are available in various designs, sometimes as combined systems, such as rain / wind detection systems. They consist of an electronic control unit, a device for data transmission and, depending on the design, different wind measuring devices . For this purpose, rotating cup anemometers or ultrasonic anemometers are used as one or two-dimensional detectors. The measured data are automatically transferred to measurement and control systems.

Intended use

Wind detection systems are part of weather stations and are used in building technology to secure windows, shading systems and roller blinds. In rail operations, for example, they serve as part of the Deutsche Bahn signaling system 90 (MAS90) to protect train traffic at exposed points such as bridges or as a flow reporting system in tunnels. These systems became important with the introduction of the ICE high-speed traffic in which train speeds have to be adapted to wind situations in order to prevent derailments.
