Winter Weddell Sea Project

The Winter Weddell Sea Project was from 6 May to 14 December, 1986 in the Antarctic conducted expedition during which the research vessel Polarstern the seven months of the southern winter in the Weddell Sea spent. It was carried out without the ship being trapped in the drift ice of the Weddell Sea.

The aim of the expedition was to investigate the life processes in the winter ice-covered polar sea. A total of 140 scientists took part in this expedition. One result was the finding that krill spread over large areas on the underside of ice floes during winter.
