The Somali Peninsula is the rather large wedge-shaped headland that lies on the Horn of Africa south of the Gulf of Aden .
The headland is located on this extreme eastern corner of the African continent and protrudes there into the Indian Ocean . It can be seen as the small counterpart to the large Arabian Peninsula , which is part of Asia on the north side of the above-mentioned bay. From a tectonic point of view, the headland lies on the African plate .
The not well defined or definable area of the Somali peninsula covers about all territories east of a straight line of Berbera on the Gulf of Aden to Garacad on the Indian Ocean ; their area does not completely coincide with the area that is referred to by the colloquial term Horn of Africa . In the aforementioned ocean , this headland, the northeasternmost point of which is Cape Guardafui, is preceded by the Socotra archipelago.
On the Somali Peninsula is the eastern part of the Somali Highlands , which rises between 900 and 2,100 m high; its south is determined by the Somali desert .
