history

As a result of increased mobility, the Scottish communities saw themselves exposed to an increasing flow of tourists in the first half of the 20th century. Event buildings have been built in many places in order to be more attractive in the competition for tourists. In Rothesay it was decided to build a center for theater and music performances. Construction began on December 5, 1923 and was completed the following year. As an architect, Walter McFarlane was responsible for the planning, who was also in charge of further redesigns in Rothesay in the 1920s. A former music pavilion was integrated into the building at this location. Until the 1960s, the flow of tourists to Rothesay ebbed and the occupancy of the Winter Gardens gradually decreased. From 1976 the building stood empty and there were plans to demolish it as no alternative uses were found. In the end, the distinctive domed structure with its pagoda towers was restored for £ 500,000 and reopened in 2001. Today it houses the tourist office, a cinema and restaurants.
