We say no to Erdoğan

"We say no to Erdoğan" was a demonstration on May 21, 2014 in Cologne , where over 30,000 participants demonstrated against the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan . The Alevi community in Germany called for the protests on the occasion of Erdoğan's visit to Germany and spoke of more than 65,000 participants.

Most of the demonstrators expressed their solidarity with the protests on Taksim Square in 2013 against the Islamic-conservative government and wore T-shirts that read “Everywhere Taksim - Everywhere Resistance”. The Soma mine disaster was also the subject of criticism, with demonstrators wearing yellow safety helmets with the words “Soma” on them.

Registration and route

The demonstration was organized by the Alevi Community of Germany . Kurdish organizations supported the call.

Meeting place for the demonstration was from 13 hours Cologne Ebert place . From there the demonstration moved over the rings to Rudolfplatz and further west over Aachener Straße to a meadow at Aachener Weiher (to Vogelsanger Straße), where the final rally took place. Originally the protest march was supposed to move from Ebertplatz via Komödienstraße to Cologne Cathedral , the police gave a different route given the expected number of participants.

Demonstrators arrived from all over Germany and from abroad.

Reactions

The Turkish government expressed incomprehension that the demonstration had not been banned by the German authorities. The Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu spoke of “abnormal and illegal provocations”, and German friends were expected to be prevented.

The Lord Mayor of Cologne Jürgen Roters (SPD) sided with the demonstrators and described the visit of the Turkish Prime Minister as a "provocation". In surveys, 69 percent of German citizens considered the visit "inappropriate".
