As a commercial poultry is in the livestock sector poultry for meat and egg production called (→ poultry production ). The breeding of commercial poultry can take place both in pure breeding and through crossbreeding .

In the broiler and when laying hens are mostly hybrid chickens used. In organic farming, two-purpose breeds with increased production costs for meat and eggs are increasingly being used .
