The 50 years memorial building

The university was founded in 1932 as the Naniwa Higher Commercial School ( 浪 華 高等 商業 学校 , Naniwa kōtō shōgyō gakkō ; Naniwa is the archaic name for Osaka). A few years later school was having a tough time and Dr. Kokushō Iwao ( 黒 正 巌 , 1895-1949) saved the school. In 1935 it was reopened as the Shōwa Higher Commercial School ( 昭和 高等 商業 学校 , Shōwa kōtō shōgyō gakkō ).

Most students went to war during the Pacific War. In 1944, the Osaka Business School for Women ( 大阪 女子 経 済 専 門 学校 , Osaka joshi keizai semmon gakkō ) was founded instead of the Higher Business School. After the war, the Higher Commercial School became the Osaka Business School ( 大阪 経 済 専 門 学校 , Ōsaka keizai semmon gakkō ), a mixed technical school.

In 1949 it developed into Osaka University of Economics with a faculty (economics). She then founded more faculties: business administration (1964), business informatics (1997) and human sciences (2002).
